Japan's largest wetland and the home of the red-crowned crane, which came close to extinction in the early 20th century and recovered thanks to winter feeding by local farmers. In winter the cranes gather at feeding sites such as Tsurui-Ito Tancho Sanctuary and roost in the Setsuri River at Otowa Bridge, where they are famously photographed at dawn in the frost.
