The wild boar is a bulky, massively built pig with short, relatively thin legs, a short, thick neck and a very large head. The head works as a plough, and powerful neck muscles let it dig 8 to 10cm into frozen ground and upturn rocks of 40 to 50kg. Males carry a mane down the back and have canines that grow throughout life (Wikipedia, general species account).
Boars live in groups of related females and young, while adult males are usually solitary outside the breeding season. In north-western Bhutan, dholes may prey on boars enough to keep their numbers down, even though there are many more cattle in the area. It is a versatile omnivore with a very well developed sense of smell. In Japan, its presence is independently supported by the national species catalogue used for this guide.
