Myotis rufoniger
Rare visitor: recorded only occasionally in this country
Habitat
Montane forest in Korea and Taiwan, subtropical forest in Vietnam; probably roosts in caves
Range
Vietnam and Laos north through China, east to Taiwan and north to Korea; also Tsushima Island, Japan
The reddish-black myotis, or black-winged myotis, is a species of vesper bat found throughout East Asia. In South Korea it is colloquially known as the 'red bat' or 'golden bat'. It is thought to have a spotty but wide range across eastern Asia, from Vietnam and Laos north through China, east to Taiwan and north to the Korean peninsula, and it has also been recorded on Tsushima Island in Japan (Wikipedia, general species account).
It has been recorded from montane forests in Korea and Taiwan and in subtropical forests in Vietnam. It is thought to roost in caves in at least part of its range. Its occurrence in Japan is independently supported by the national catalogue and distribution evidence used to assemble this regional guide. Japanese distribution should be checked against current national records when planning field identification or survey work.
