Goniurosaurus sengokui
Rare visitor: recorded only occasionally in this country
Sengoku's Gecko (Goniurosaurus sengokui) is an eyelid gecko with reddish or pinkish tones in its dorsal pattern and iris, banding along the body and mottling between successive transverse bands. Its pattern, scale structure and absence of the sharply keeled tubercles seen in Banded Ground Gecko help distinguish it from other members of the Ryukyu Goniurosaurus group. Identification should use the full combination of documented structure, pattern and locality because closely related island forms may overlap in general appearance (Wikipedia, general species account; Reptile Database).
It is endemic to Akajima and Tokashikijima in the Okinawa island group of Japan's Ryukyu Archipelago and is oviparous. The species was named for Showichi Sengoku in recognition of his contribution to public knowledge and appreciation of wildlife. The opened species sources document distribution, egg-laying and diagnostic morphology but give insufficient ecological detail to add diet or activity claims. The description stays within species-level information available from the opened accounts; traits not documented there are omitted rather than transferred from related lizards (Wikipedia, general species account; Reptile Database).
