Gekko shibatai
Rare visitor: recorded only occasionally in this country
Gekko shibatai (Gekko shibatai) is a Ryukyu gecko described in 2008 whose adult males lack distinct preanal pores. It has enlarged dorsal tubercles, dark irregular spots beneath the head, yellow upper lip scales and a conspicuous dark stripe along the lower lip; its usual count of scansors beneath the fourth toe also helps separate it from related poreless geckos. Identification should use the full combination of documented structure, pattern and locality because closely related island forms may overlap in general appearance (Wikipedia, general species account; Reptile Database).
The species is endemic to Japan's Ryukyu Archipelago and its type locality is Takarajima in the Tokara Group. It is oviparous. The name honours Yasuhiko Shibata for contributions to knowledge of Japanese Gekko diversity and distribution. Accessible sources establish these taxonomic, reproductive and diagnostic facts but do not support adding detailed diet or behavioural claims. The description stays within species-level information available from the opened accounts; traits not documented there are omitted rather than transferred from related lizards (Wikipedia, general species account; Reptile Database).
